When we discover at last
The secrets of our humanity,
Will we also discover
A way to transcend it?
Our fondest dream
And our deepest fear
Is to merge ourselves
Completely with another;
To be fully and wholly known,
With all of our secrets
Laid bare.
These shells of flesh
Which safeguard our consciousness
Also deny us its fulfillment;
Binds us to a loving lie
That says we are things set apart.
And yet, we struggle
To once again be one...
Struggle because we accept the lie
And never look past
To see that what was once
Has always been,
And, but for our acceptance,
We have never been alone.
This is the bane of the corporeal;
To be proscribed to sound,
To sight, to touch,
When mind-to-mind contact,
Heart-to-heart knowledge,
Is beyond our reach...
This is what it is,
To be born mortal, and human.
... most recent incarnation of a poem I wrote a little over ten years ago (college should so never be that distant a memory...) -- I'm in search of memories today. ;)
