Because he deserves it.

Alice in Chains was far more a part of shaping my tastes than I can say. Dirt still has the power to change my moods almost instantly. His (Staley's) death, as his recent life, is a waste of talent, potential, and much influence - but what he did accomplish should be recognised and honoured. Please, sign the petition.

how/when did he die?

I pounded Dirt into my skull for extended periods of time while sitting in a 3 foot by 3 foot closet playing motorcycle racing games on a Sega. (hours upon hours for weeks on end)

The album definitely brings out any sort of nihilistic streak I have. It feels good.

Didn't care so much for the stuff that came after that (that I've heard).

oh, and, I'd boycott MTV but I've not watched it since '94 or so. And even then it sucked.

I remember watching Liquid Television and Headbanger's Ball at a friend's house. That was sometimes good stuff.

Problem with Layne is that when he died that was a LOT of what some people's reaction was -- "What, he was still alive?". Seriously. Part of the reason AIC stopped is because Layne got so bad the Cantrell and the other guys just gave up on it all. I think there are similarly a lot of people just waiting to hear that STP's Scott Weiland OD's and dies or something too because... well, he's a heroin fiend and everyone is expecting it at this point...

The last thing I can remember Layne really doing was the "Another Brick In the Wall" remake with Tom Morello and a couple other guys that appeared on The Faculty soundtrack back in... what, 1999 if I remember right? Aside from that, no Mad Season IIRC and definitely no AIC. The boxed set had two new unreleased songs at the time on of which was "Get Born Again" and AIC fans they were going to have to make do with that at that point I think.

Though I think a lot of people, myself included, had hope somewhere that Layne would have wisened up and gotten the guys to have given AIC one more shot. That slim chance is wasted now though.

Facelift is one of best hard rock albums in my mind, bar none. When I decided that I wanted to sing for a band, I auditioned with the track "Dirt". Every time I practice singing I wonder if I will ever be able to hit the opening scream in "Would" with the same grittiness and intensity that he did.

Maybe everyone knew we had pretty much heard the last of him, but my world is a less rich place without his voice.

Besides, MTV won't shut the hell up about Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. She certainly was a force in the music world, but is a 24-hour marathon of "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" really warranted when Staley got a blip on their hourly news?
