Ever sat and watched a baby play? Something catches her eye, and her eyes widen... and she reaches for it. Sometimes with a too-grown-up glance around first, to see who's watching, before the temptation becomes too much? Totally absorbed, all but oblivious to anything but the pleasure and fascination of the new find?

... I'm really nothing like that baby.

But I'm learning.

No, we're all like the baby somewhere...We just have forgotten to be so open about being fascinated with the world.

I think that's one of the reasons some of us keep having kids.. They teach us (again) what it was like to view the world with such open wonderment. They remind us how the tiniest thing can be so fascinating. We re-live our innocence vicariously through them.

I think I'm guilty of that to some extent. Equally strong, though, was the wish to guide my children through this world that can be so full of beauty. We need more people who see the glory and feel the awe and potential all around us. I thought I could pass that magic on, or at least help them not to lose it.

I think most of us want to point out the beauty and majik, but it's they who teach us how to see it. :)

Almost -- I had in mind the lack of concern about reaching out, the inevitability of reaching out. She hasn't yet learned to pull her hand back, or, worse, to pretend she doesn't want it even though she does.
