I was hoping to have more to tell, but.
I (of course) accepted my own assignment yesterday, and decided to seriously look into something I've wanted for a long time. I've wanted to fly since I got my first up-close look at an airplane when I was five. My eyesight isn't good enough, even corrected, for the Air Force to let me fly... so I've let that be my excuse for a long time. "I'd love to fly, but with my vision, they'd never let me" is such an easy line. But, well... the Air Force isn't the only game in town. And if my sight is more than good enough for me to be pushed into learning to drive a car, then it's good enough for me to look into learning to do something I want and would (will!) enjoy.
So... there's a small airfield in Smithfield, out of which some private aircraft operate. I didn't make it there yesterday, but I'm told that I'm welcome to look around during the week. I did pick up a couple of books, and some prep materials for the private pilot's written test. And I'm properly terrified but also properly enthused. Wish me luck. :)

Date: 2002-07-27 08:05 pm (UTC)Hey, I don't know if you saw my earlier post, but for the sake of keeping things tidy I removed you from my friends list. It's not in response to anything you did or a lack of interest, but we really don't interact at all anymore. It was nice getting to know you, you've enriched my life.. and I'm sure we'll bump into each other again. :)

Date: 2002-07-28 06:40 am (UTC)Will you pass the eyesight requirements for civilian flying? I hope you do!!! My brother failed for military flying, due to one bad eye, but is now a navigator in the RCAF. He still spends a lot of time in the air!
