I'm sorry.

I'm sorry this country's so filled with "my way or the highway" hardliners that the mere hint that we might be doing something wrong got you flooded with hate mail. I'm sorry that one little statement of "if you didn't know this was America, who would you think was responsible?" got so resoundingly jumped on that there's no doubt left that, yes, this is what America's become. And that there are folks who like it that way. More than 140,000 of them, I'm given to understand, who think that criticism of "our boys", no matter what they've done or are doing, is more heinous than any act the boys could be carrying out. I'm sorry that pointing out unpleasant truth seems to equate with treason in some people's minds anymore.

I'm sorry you backed down, but I know why you felt you had to. I'm sorry that you backing down now means other people will be less likely to stand up in the first place from now on.

But most of all, I'm sorry we don't have many more like you in high places. If we did, maybe the unpleasant truth you stood up and pointed out would have been about some country other than America after all.
