Unfortunately, this will only work for paid accounts, unless one of you can answer me on how to change the value of %%urlfriends%% from the overrides section.
Anyway... create a group containing the friends you want to see. Note the URL for it, and then go create a style, if you haven't already, for your lastn view. Scroll down to the bottom, where the html for the whole page is displayed, and replace that %%urlfriends%% with the URL for your new friends group. Then make sure your journal is using the style you just created/edited... (you do that from the modify journal link...) and clicking the friends link on your journal page will show you that modified friends page.
This works for everyone... and much thanks to
rahaeli for the nudge in the right direction. According to
bradfitz:
Default View
"If you make a friend group called "Default View", only the people in it will show up on your friends list by default.
A few parts of the site know about this ... if you add a new friend with the web interface, the "Default View" group will already be checked, since it's assumed you'll always want to read that person.
This is a cool way to list somebody as a friend but not actually read them. :-)
Note that your default view is only visible to you, not other people. Other people looking at your friends page will see everybody."

A better idea...
